International Joint-Statements on Japan's Bidding
December 8th 2004 atrocities December 7th 2004, marks the 63rd anniversary of Imperial Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, which prompted the United States to enter World War II. Despite 60 years having passed since WWII ended, Japanese government still refuses to acknowledge its war crimes and war-time atrocities. Last September, Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro announced that Japan would seek a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. We fully support the decision made at the International Solidarity Council in Beijing on Nov.26th 2004 and we strongly urge the nations of the U.N. and Bush Administration to reject the Japanese bid. The United Nations was created after the second world war to build world peace. The UN Security Council is to maintain peace and security among nations and sanction states for human rights violations and criminal acts. Japan, in denial for the past 60 years, has maintained a position contrary to the fundamental principles of the U.N. and the Security Council. The Japanese leadership's white-washing of its past criminal history continues without repentance, as can be seen in its high court decisions on WWII victims. In contrast, Germany and Austria finally concluded their wartime compensation issues in December 1999, when the two countries peacefully settled with the Holocaust lawsuit victims. Thus, the WWII chapter for Germany and Austria is finally closed. Until Japan unequivocally apologizes and makes reparations to the victims of its crimes including sex slavery, forced labor, and perpetrating germ warfare and the Nanking massacre, to name a few, Japan should not be granted a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council. We urge the people of Japan and concerned world citizens to demand that the Japanese government comes clean with the past and becomes an honorable member of the international community.
