Dear GA & Alpha-la members Korean community had a fundraiser for Mr. Tom Lantos Saturday 16th. Initially, we were told this should NOT be a strict HR 121 event, but a community event to support Lantos in which HR121 could be raised during the Q&A session. so, I was not able to share this event with ALPHA-LA, sorry. The event was a great success, as you probably know from other media source. It is the first time, Lantos specificaly mentioned in public: "I will present the HR121 to my committee on June 26th, and I expect it will pass by a substantial margin. The title of the event was "Lantos for Congress- champion of human rights" Not only he is the only survivor of Holocaust within the U.S. congress, He shared a story that he was arrested by Washington DC police when he tried to deliver thousands of birthday cards for A-ung-san Susie (the Barmese woman activist, not sure of the spelling) at Burmese embassy. In terms of Money, we tried to manage this event at a minimum possible cost. Daniel Lee in Cal coalition negotiated with Lantos' fundraising staff to $20,000. However, the fund raised on site was more than $30,000. So everybody was happy. The two little girls dressed in Korean costume (my idea) melted Lantos couple's heart immediately upon the couple's arrival. The first thing he said, "Annette and I have 17 grand children, we like children very much. I feel at home. I will make an informal speech today." so, the flower giving children worked far better than what Japanese did for Mr. and Mrs. Lantos--- the former Kamikaje solldier conducting an artificial tea ceremony. The audience raised him a arismathic question: "how did you get 17 grand children out of 2 daughters??" 2007년 5월 25일 현황입니다. 마이크 혼다 의원이 예측하기를, 5월 말 메모리얼데이 (미국 현충일) 연휴 이전에 위안부 결의안을 통과시킨다는 계획이 있었습니다. 현재 위안부 결의안은, 당초 목표로 하던 100명을 초과하여 연방하원 130 명의 지지를 얻었고, 외교관계위원회의 탐 랜토스 회장이 하원 전체 회의 안건에 올리면 (이 절차를 mark-up이라고 함) 하원 전체회의 표결에 붙여 통과여부를 결정짓게 됩니다. 지난 주 목요일 밤에 샌프란시스코에 올라가 Global Alliance 와 미국에서 위안부결의안을 추진하는 HR121 Coalition 팀과 공동기자회견을 가지고 탐 랜토스 외교위 위원장, 낸시 펠로시 하원의장 상대 로비를 논의하였습니다. 글로벌 얼라이언스 팀은 HR121 의 전국코디네이터 아나벨 박 (영어권 활동가)씨와 같이 랜토스의 지역구 사무실을 방문하였습니다. 지역구 사무실의 직원들은 글로벌 얼라이언스 이그나시오 딩과 20년지기 친분이 있는 사람들로, 랜토스가 위안부결의안을 지지한다는 말을 해주었습니다. 저는 중국계 리더들의 도움으로 하원의장 낸시 펠로시와 만날 수 있었습니다. 아시안커뮤니티 리더들이 마련한 리셉션에 참석해서 연설하는 펠로시 의장의 말씀이 끝나자 마자, 저는 펠로시의 손을 덥석 잡고서, “HR121 반드시 통과되어야 한다는 범아시아계주민들의 목소리를 전달하러 왔다”는 말을 분명히 했고, “Yes, I know. You have to say the same thing to Tom Lantos” 라고 답을 들었습니다. 펠로시 의장에게 직접 이 결의안 통과를 강조한 Rape of Nanking Redress Coalition 의 중국계 릴리안 싱, 줄리 탱 판사님들에게는 펠로시 의장은 “Yes, Yes, Yes. I support HR121.” 이라는 말을 분명하게 하셨습니다. 현재 이그나시오 딩이 글로벌 얼라이언스 리더들과 펠로시와의 개별 면담을 신청해놓은 상태입니다. 따라서 현재까지 펠로시 본인과 랜토스 보좌관들의 지지를 (일단 구두로서) 확보한 셈이 되었습니다. 문제는 이번 주까지 외교관계 위원회가 안건으로 HR121 를 올리지 않은 이유는 아직 랜토스 위원장측에서 아직 premature (분위기가 무르익지 않았다)하다고 판단했기 때문이라고 합니다. 미 연방하원의석은 435석입니다. 적어도 과반수 의원의 지지를 받아야 일본측 로비에 휘말리지 않고 안전하게 통과시킬 수 있을 것입니다. 다행히 6월말 외교관계위 회의가 다시 있다고 하니까, 이제 한국계 활동가들이 리드하여 미 전국적인 조직으로 성장한 HR121 Coalition 은 더 많은 의원들의 지지를 확보하고, 더 많은 거리서명을 받고, 랜토스 위원장과 펠로시 의장이 '이제 표결에 붙여도 안전하겠다' 라고 확신을 가질 때까지 계속해서 활동할 계획입니다. 이번 연방 회기는 8월에 휴회에 들어갑니다. 따라서 7월까지는 시간이 있고, 또 HR121 이 이번에 통과하지 못하면, 가을에 또 상정하고, 내년에도 또 상정하고 통과될 때까지 계속해서 줄기차게 상정하면 됩니다. 마이크 혼다가 1월말 상정한 H.R.121 은 2008년 말까지 통과시킬 수 있는 시한이 있습니다. 이미 마이크 혼다는 여기에 정치생명을 걸었습니다. 여기까지 온 마당에 그가 변심하여 입장을 선회할 수 없다는 판단입니다. 끝까지 될 때까지 밀어부치기 작전으로 나갈 것입니다. 한국계와 중국계 활동조직의 연대가 든든한 디딤돌이 되어 줄 것으로 확신합니다. 그러나 혹 만약의 경우, 부시행정부 하에서는 어려울 지도 모릅니다. 그러나 천만다행히 부시의 임기는 올해 말까지 입니다. 특히 부시 다음에는 민주당 대통령이 당선될 가능성이 높아서 내년에는 전망이 더욱 좋습니다. 우리는 총력전을 다해 반드시 결의안을 통과시킬 것입니다. 그렇게 해서 작년말 은퇴한 래인 에반스 의원이 수차례 결의안 발의를 위해 기울여온 노력에 대한 작은 보답이라도 될 것입니다. 한국에서 어떠한 일을 도와주실 수 있을지 Coalition 측과 협의해서 알려드리겠습니다. 공동발의자 현황은 www.support121.org 에서 수시로 확인가능합니다. http://support121.org 정연진 드림 바른역사 정의연대 Jean Chung 정 연진 Historical Justice Now www.historicaljustice.org Pioneer of e-NGO waging a peaceful war for Humankind
